Runway Overrun Warning (ROW)/Runway overrun Protection (ROP)

Runway Overrun Warning (ROW)/Runway overrun Protection (ROP)

ROW/ROP SELECTOR SWITCH- A NEW ADDITION TO AIRBUS NEO COCKPIT:

The introduction of a ROW/ROP selector switch is called ROPS step 2+ function. It is an upgrade to the existing Runway Overrun Warning (ROW)/Runway overrun Protection (ROP) function on A320 Family NEO aircraft and it allows the Pilot to select the actual runway condition (DRY or WET) before landing.

The advantages of having this new ROW/ROP selector are that:

 1) It enables the pilot to inform the system about the available runway conditions (DRY/WET)

2)The visual and aural alerts provided are optimised than earlier

3) More parameters are considered for Landing distance computation and selection made is indicated on ND. Improving the safety margin.

ROW function gets armed automatically at 400 feet AGL and continuously computes the braking distance depending on the selection (DRY/WET) plus other parameters and compare them with the LDA (landing distance available) until start of the braking action. LDA is computed using the GPS Position and the Runway length information from TAWS. On board computers such as FAC’s, FMGC’s, EGPWS, MMR are responsible for this function.

ROP function gets activated from start of braking until aircraft stops.

If a risk of overrun is detected (computed landing distances are more than the LDA) the ROW/ROP triggers: ‐ Visual alert messages displayed on the PFDs ‐ Aural alert messages provided through loudspeakers.

ROW predicts the overrun and alerts the pilot well in-advance so that Pilot will have the option to initiate Go-Around. ROP alerts the pilot to consider Maximum braking/ Max reverse if overrun is detected after touchdown.
